JACKSON, MO (KFVS) -

The Highway 61 yard sale kicks off on Thursday, Sept. 3, ahead of the Labor Day holiday.

The annual event spans from Bloomsdale to Jackson, Mo along Hwy. 61 and runs through Sunday.

According to Brian Gerau, the Jackson Chamber of Commerce director, the yard sale is a very unique event that brings in buyers and sellers from all over Missouri and even other states.

Gerau says they've been taking calls about the event most of the week, and expect a big turnout. In turn, he says that means good business for the local economy.

The Missouri Department of Transportation urges drivers to be careful while driving along Hwy. 61, as since there will be more traffic and more congestion than any other weekend. MoDOT is putting up safety message boards along the route to alert drivers of the unusual traffic patterns and promote safe driving. Drivers should be on the lookout for people making frequent stops.

For those wanting to sell, there are no registration fees to be involved in the yard sale. All a person has to do is set up and sell along the highway.

There are no set times for the yard sale. The times any spot opens and closes are up to each seller. According to the organizers, most sellers will be set up by 7 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Organizers say each day has been busy in the past. Typically, vendors are less picked over on Thursday. By Saturday, though, there are typically more things to choose from because sellers are off work.

Some sellers are posting their locations on the event's Facebook page.
