A muggy morning will kick off a hot and sunny afternoon. Expect it to be hotter today by a degree or two, which means the heat index will be a factor as well. Be careful if you or your child will be outside for after-school activities.

Making Headlines:

Shaken up: A 2.8 magnitude earthquake hit parts of southeast Missouri around 8:46 p.m. on Tuesday. The quake was reportedly centered 5 miles south southwest of New Madrid, Mo.

Search Continues: Authorities in a small northern Illinois community searched through the night for three men wanted in the fatal shooting of a veteran police officer. Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz was a three-decade member of the department and a father of four sons.

Stepped up: Thousands of people will be on the roads this weekend for Labor day, and that's why law enforcement agencies across the Heartland will be out in full force. Authorities will be will be on the lookout for speeding, driving while intoxicated, distracted driving and seat belt compliance

Wobbly Wednesday: A lot of eyes will be on the U.S. stock market today after China's markets minimized losses amid speculation Beijing was intervening to support prices.
