Plans for Cape Girardeau sports complex move forward

There's a large, empty lot off of Interstate 55 between Cape Girardeau and Jackson, and this land will soon be the site of a new 120,000 square foot indoor sports complex with room to grow.

The facility will include turf for things like indoor soccer, hardwood floors for basketball and volleyball and also batting and golf cages and a walking track.

The project has been in the works for more than a year and a half now, but Councilman Mark Lanzotti said he hopes to break ground within 100 days and the project should be completed by Fall 2017.

"I know that there are parents out there in surrounding communities, St. Louis, Carbondale, Memphis, Germantown, they are going to want to come here and play here. This is going to be a state of the art top notch facility and it really brings a high level of excitement for myself as well as the council,” he said.

The facility will sit on just more than 10 acres donated by MidAmerica Hotels Corporation located at the northeast corner of Interstate 55 and 61, an area known as Center Junction.

The city has until October 19 to determine whether or not to acquire an additional 19 acres for further expansion.

"As part of the generous proposal from MidAmerica we are looking at some options of some additional space and additional acreage and maybe if we are able to get together on that to do some additional facilities," said Lanzotti.

Lanzotti said the location of the facility is key. It's estimated that 30,000 cars will pass the site every day.

The facility will also have a big economic impact and bring more opportunities for tourism to the area.
