New Carbondale police chief candidates narrowed down to 2

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

The number of candidates for the Carbondale police chief position have been narrowed down to two.

According to Carbondale City Manger Kevin Baity, the original application pool included more than 10. He said interviews were conducted on Friday, Aug. 28.

"As part of the review process, I enlisted the assistance of two community members representing Southern Illinois University and the Carbondale Board of Police and Fire Commissioners and one representative from city staff," Baity said. "The panel utilized questions presented by the Human Relations Commission, an editorial column in 'The Southern Illinoisan' newspaper as well as questions developed to engage the candidates in their policing philosophies and community engagement techniques."

Baity said the review panel made their recommendation and he hopes to make a final selection in the next 5-7 days.

"The next step is to make a conditional offer to the selected candidate," he said.

Baity added that his goal is to be able to announce the new Carbondale police chief by Sept. 14.
