A Mississippi County woman has been charged after an extensive fraud investigation conducted by the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Department.

According to Mississippi County Sheriff Keith Moore, the investigation began earlier this month when Deputy Marc Tragesser was contacted by management at a housing company in reference to fraudulent use of a company account at a local business.

During the subsequent investigation, Deputy Tragesser compiled records which established that the company’s former manager, Meredith Jean Thomas, 44, of East Prairie, Mo., had used a company credit card to buy personal items from various businesses in southeast Missouri.

Thomas was authorized to use the credit card for work-related expenses, but according to the deputy’s report, she used the card to buy personal household items valued in excess of one thousand dollars.

When confronted about the accounting discrepancies, Thomas reportedly agreed to return the unlawfully obtained property but failed to do so.

Based on the information compiled during the investigation, Deputy Tragesser applied for and obtained a warrant for Thomas’ arrest.

On Tuesday, Thomas was located in East Prairie, placed under arrest and transported to the Mississippi County Detention Center.

Thomas is charged with theft/stealing of property valued at more than $500 and fraudulent use of a credit/debit device.

Thomas was released from custody on Thursday evening after posting a $25,000 surety bond.
