CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

A new event focuses on “seniors” of any age.

The first ever Senior Matters Expo takes place August 29 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Osage Center in Cape Girardeau.

The event is an opportunity to connect high school seniors and seniors in life to services in the area.

Admission is free and open to the public.

“The expo enables people to visit with local service providers for their age demographic to meet their needs,” expo organizer Linda Bass said.

Over 50 vendors will be on hand including a variety of healthcare representatives, emergency response teams, employers and colleges.

Organizers will also present up to 10 scholarships for area seniors graduating in the Class of 2016.

The event will include a community canned food drive organized by the Catholic Social Ministry’s food pantry and a blood drive for the local American Red Cross.

Les Tainter, a Senior Matters committee member, says the expo will help benefit that community beyond the four hour event.

“Our goals are to award ten $500 scholarships to high school seniors for their post-graduate studies, collect 10,000 cans of food and 50 units of blood," Tainter says. "If we accomplish that, we will be making a difference for a lot of families.”
