Job fair to help employees at Wickliffe paper mill

Come October the paper mill in Wickliffe will stall production indefinitely.

With the chance for more than 300 people to lose their jobs completely, an Illinois company is looking to lend a hand.

Extra Help Inc., a job placement company, is hosting a job fair on Friday.

The event goes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the City Clerks Office in the City Hall building in Wickliffe.

The goal is to let current employees of the paper mill know what other opportunities are available.

"We want to be able to offer that first initial interview with them which means, again listening to them and hearing what they are looking for and their different skill set and discuss the different types of positions," Kelly Walsh said, staffing development with extra help.

Some of the different industries with openings include general labor, manufacturing, and forklift operators.

The job fair is open to all those that want to start looking for a new job starting now.

Working adults will be able to even start the interview process when they attend.

Walsh said that's important since applying for a job has changed in the last 10 years.

"In this day and age it's changed so much from that initial time when people walk into and employment or a company and fill out an application," Walsh said. "That has changed a lot. A lot is online, and they don't get that face to face anymore and we still provide that."

Wickliffe Mayor George Lane is hopeful the plant won't have to shut down completely.

However, he supports any help to keep the residents of Wickliffe employed.
