BUTLER COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

One person had been charged with murder in connection with the man found dead in the trunk of a car in Butler County.

Edward William Weaver, 24, of Poplar Bluff is charged with first degree and second degree murder. He was taken to the Butler County Jail with no bond.

Amber McDannald, a person of interest in the case, has been detained.

Butler County Coroner Jim Akers identified the man found in the trunk of his own car as Norman K. Jones, 48 of Poplar Bluff.

A sergeant found the car Thursday around 2 p.m. on County Road 355. That's between Harviell and Neelyville.

"We think it's been there for a few days," he said. "Our deputy seen it on the side of the road, seen it in a ditch. Didn't know if it was associated with a traffic accident or something like that, so we investigated further and that's when he found the obvious odor of a decomposing body, and subsequently found the individual in the trunk."

Authorities believe the body had been in the car since Sunday. Jones' arms and legs were bound and there was an apparent ligature around his neck.

Some people who live in this area drove by the abandoned vehicle multiple times.

“[My friend saw the car setting] there on the side of the road and didn’t think anything of it," Jesse McDaniel said. “He said it was pretty creepy, you know, knowing there was a dead body setting in the back of the trunk.”

Results of an autopsy conducted Friday morning are not being released pending toxicology results. However, according to the probable cause statement, Weaver is accused of killing Jones by either shooting or strangling him during a drug deal.

Jones' wife reported him missing on Aug. 26, three days after she last had contact with him. She said Jones was supposed to be with Weaver's father.

Weaver allegedly called a friend and told him, "I am having car trouble and I have a body in the trunk."

He also told the friend the car belonged to man in the trunk, according to the probable cause statement.

The friend told police that Weaver said Jones had stolen some pills from him.

Weaver was also overheard telling McDannald that "he will not do that again," and when asked what, he said "steal dope."

A witness told police she and her husband noticed a white male and female inside the victim's car on Sunday. They stopped to check on the wellbeing of the two in the car. The witness identified Weaver from a photo lineup.
