Carbondale man hospitalized after flipping car in creek

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

A man was taken to the hospital after he was pulled unconscious from his overturned car in a creek near Carbondale.

The City of Carbondale Police Department responded to the intersection of South Wall Street and East Park Street in reference to a traffic accident on Thursday at 1:44 a.m.

When officers arrived, they saw a vehicle upside down in the drainage ditch on the west side of the road.

The second vehicle was hanging over the edge of the drainage ditch, but had not fallen into the creek.

Officers observed the driver of the vehicle that was upside down in the ditch was attempting to hold his head above the water.

As his head went under water, officers jumped into the creek and were able to pull him from the vehicle.

He was unconscious at this time.

The driver of this vehicle was transported to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale and later to a St. Louis area hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation into the incident is continuing.
