This week in music: 1971

(KFVS) -

Let's journey back to the soft rock sounds of the early 1970's.

These were the songs Billboard Magazine had at the top of its Hot 100 this week in 1971.

At number five was Jean Knight with Mr. Big Stuff, a song she performed on the first season of Soul Train.

Marvin Gaye checked in at number four with an anthem about the environment, Mercy Mercy Me (the Ecology).

Holding down the number three spot was the Five Man Electrical Band with their hit Signs.

At number two was John Denver's signature song which is still popular today, Take Me Home Country Roads.

And in the top spot How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.  It was the very first chart topper for the Bee Gees and spent four weeks at number one. The Bee Gees had originally offered the song to Andy Williams but eventually recorded it themselves.
