The Williamson County Regional Airport will receive more than $4 million in grant money from the U.S. Department of Transportation to build a new airport terminal in Marion.

"We couldn't be more elated of the funding announcement that came from Congressman Bost and the FAA," airport director, Doug Kimmel said.

Rep. Mike Bost announced the $4,066,596 grant.

Kimmel said they are in the midst of construction of phase one, and will soon be bidding for phase two.

With the $4 million announcement of grant money, Kimmel said it gives assurance that the federal component will be matched to complete the project.

"The first phase came in about eight million dollars," Kimmel said. "About five and a half from FAA  funds and two and a half from local airport monies. The second phase is being bid right now has a budget estimate of roughly half or a little less than that. This federal amount will give us assurance that the federal share available for us once we see what the bids are."

Bids are due late next week. The first funding announcement came last fall.

"Phase one gets us the building itself, it gets us the steel that you see going up now, it's going to have the exterior of the building complete, along with parking lot and entrance road improvements basically redoing everything that we have out here," Kimmel said. "Phase two will just be the completion on the inside of the building."

Kimmel said the new terminal will allow more growth in the area for people and businesses to work and visit.

“Air service is a critical component of not only getting people of Southern Illinois out to places in the world, but also access into Southern Illinois from companies, individuals , businesses that might be looking to locate here," Kimmel said. "We have to have the facility that in the years to come, we’ll be able to accommodate that growth.”

Kimmel said the terminal should be completed by next fall, weather permitting.

Williamson County Regional Airport is the region's sole primary commercial service airport providing daily flights to St. Louis and generating more than $21 million in annual economic impact.
