2 Carbondale men convicted in home invasion, armed robbery

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

Two men from Carbondale, Illinois have been found guilty of home invasion and armed robbery.

Terrance A. Vinson, 37, and Melvin L. Sanford, 29, both of Carbondale, were found guilty of home invasion and armed robbery.

A third man, Elijah J. Mosley, 21, of Carbondale, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to seven years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. He is eligible for the Impact Incarceration Program, also known as "Boot Camp."

On Dec. 11, 2014, Carbondale police were dispatched to a home at the Cedar Court Trailer Park in Carbondale in reference to a report of a home invasion and armed robbery that had just occurred.

The victims told police that several men, wearing black clothing, forced their way into her trailer and robbed them, holding them and their 9-year-old child at gunpoint.

The suspects took the victims' cell phones when the left the home.

Officers were able to track the cell phone to a 1988 Cadillac registered to Melvin Sanford.

They found the vehicle, performed a traffic stop and arrested the tree occupants: Sanford, Vinson and Mosley.

During a search of the vehicle, police say the stolen cell phones were found in the vehicle. Other items found in the vehicle were consistent with the items reported by the victims as stolen.

A sentencing date for Sanford and Vinson will be set at a later date. Their bonds were revoked and they are in custody pending sentencing.

According to Jackson County State's Attorney, Michael C. Carr, the charges each carry a minimum sentence of 21 years and a maximum sentence of 45 years in prison. This enhancement is based upon the jury finding that a gun was used in the commission of these offenses.

The investigation was conducted by the Carbondale Police Department. Assistant State's Attorney Mark Hamrock was responsible for the prosecution of this case.
