Sen. Roy Blunt visits Cape Girardeau VA, discusses ways improve healthcare

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Senator Roy Blunt visited the Cape Girardeau VA on Wednesday to hear from veterans and discuss ways improve their healthcare.

Blunt said some of the main topics were more options for veterans when deciding where to receive care and better access to mental health services.

The stop was one of several around the state. Local veterans say they talked about what's good and bad about the VA in hopes of bringing continued change.

Veterans and Blunt agree that more choices and less wait time for vets are key issues.

"I think all veterans on all cases ought to be able to go wherever they want to get their healthcare and the VA can continue to be one of those places," Blunt said.

"Put them on a waiting list and make them wait and wait and sometimes they pass away before they even get care,” Army Veteran Jim Roche said.

Also talked about Wednesday was the progress of a new VA facility in Cape Girardeau.

Blunt said it'll provide more opportunities to recruit physicians and psychiatrist to serve veterans better.

KFVS 12 is told that the clinic could be completed by 2018.
