New IL law to provide more resources for campus sexual assault survivors

ILLINOIS (KFVS) -

Illinois State Representative Brandon Phelps' legislation, House Bill 821, aimed at helping colleges and universities prevent and address sexual assaults, was recently signed into law.

"This new law will require universities to work harder to prevent and respond to reports of sexual violence. As a father of a young daughter, having strong laws in place to protect our young people is vitally important to me and this law will help to protect our kids and will bring those to justice who seek to do them harm," Representative Phelps said.

The measure encourages increased reporting of alleged assaults by requiring schools to offer victims and witnesses the right to report incidents confidentially.

In addition, the measure will require schools to provide survivors with confidential advisors who will work with students to report alleged crimes and ensure that they receive accommodations provided under the bill.

Prevention and awareness training programs will also be implemented for students who take at least one on campus class.
