Missouri business to host Confederate flag fundraiser

The Confederate flag controversy has swept across the nation.

In the last few months we've seen it removed from license plates, outside courthouses and it could soon come off of an iconic car.

One of the most famous places you'll see a rebel flag is on top of '69 charger, like the General Lee from "Dukes of Hazzard."

There are a ton of replicas out there and now, apparently, some people want the rebel flag off those cars.

However, the owners of Hanners wholesale don't want that trend to continue.

Jeannie Hanners is the owner of Hanners Wholesale, which sells a whole lot of confederate flag novelty items and she said those items have continued to fly off the shelves.

She argues the flag promotes history, not hate and is trying to keep it from being painted over.

"They want to take off of the 'Dukes of Hazzard' car and they have already taken the show off the air and we are just wanting to be able to save the car to its original paint job,” said Hanners.

The store plans to host a fundraiser to keep the confederate flag flying high.

Tommey Robey said he grew up watching the "Dukes of Hazzard" and has never thought of it as a racist image.

"I love the rebel flag. I have one, I will always have one and if other people don't like it that's their prerogative. If I want one I am going to have one,” he said.

But the image remains controversial. Some see it as an icon of slavery that represents black oppression and should come down everywhere while others say it symbolizes their history and identity.

"I don't see why a few people decide what the majority of us do," said Robey.

Hanners said the event is to promote the history behind the rebel flag.

"It is just a fun day, a fun event that we have put together that everyone can enjoy as a family,” said Hanners.

Professional golfer Bubba Watson is on the other side of this issue.

He owns a General Lee and tweeted back in June that he plans to paint an American flag over the rebel flag on his car.

The event will be at Hanners Wholesale on Saturday, August 29 at 12 p.m. It will include a parade at 1 p.m., and people will be able to have their pictures taken with the "Dukes of Hazzard" car.
