Jackson Civic Center construction 75 percent complete

JACKSON, MO (KFVS) -

If you live in Jackson, Missouri you'll soon have a new place to take shelter from a storm and attend community events.

City officials say the Jackson Civic Center and safe room is about 75 percent complete.

Public Works Director Rodney Bollinger said it should be finished by the end of October.

The center can be used for many things, such as a gymnasium, banquet hall, meeting rooms, offices, coffee, bar/concessions, display/common areas, catering kitchen, and patio. Bollinger said the safe room can hold 1,990 people during a tornado.

Brockmiller Construction, Inc. was awarded the $5,677,100 contract last fall. A grant from the FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program is funding $2,521,263 of the cost of the safe room.

Bollinger said the new building would not have been possible without a generous donation from the Southeast Missouri Medical Center.

The expected grand opening date is January 1, 2016.
