GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) -

The Julian Carroll-Jackson Purchase Parkway reopened at the 16 mile marker in Graves County after a semi crashed into another vehicle.

According to Graves County Sheriff Dewayne Redmon, a semi transporting a wide load was sitting on the shoulder of the northbound lane. He said the rear escort vehicle for that wide load, driven by Jerry L. Smith, of New York, was sitting about 50 feet behind the semi.

Sheriff Redmon said the escort vehicle was sitting partially over the fog line, but its warning lights were on.

Smith saw an oncoming semi, driven by Geoffrey Galloway of Calvert City, Ky., approaching from behind.

The sheriff said Smith jumped from his vehicle and tried to alert Galloway to the stopped traffic ahead of him by waving a flag. He said Smith jumped out of the way as Galloway's semi hit the rear of Smith's vehicle causing major damage.

Galloway's semi then crossed the median, continued across both southbound lanes of traffic and crashed head-on into the earth embankment on the west side of Parkway.

Galloway was taken to an area hospital for his injuries.

Sheriff Redmon said both sides of the Parkway had to be shut down due to the wreck. The road was reopened at about 4:45 p.m.

The sheriff's office was assisted by Kentucky State Police, Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section, Mayfield Police Department, Mayfield/Graves County EMS, Mayfield Fire Department, Wingo Fire Department, Graves County Rescue Squad and the Kentucky Department of Transportation.
