Verso paper mill change stretches far beyond Kentucky

More than 300 workers will be looking for work after the Verso Corporation decided to stop production at the paper mill in Wickliffe, Kentucky.

The move could also cost Heartland logging companies one of their biggest customers.

The fallout from the closure of the Verso paper mill stretches far beyond Kentucky.

One Illinois logging company says it will lose 80 percent of its business when Verso shuts down.

"I always thought that it would just be a continuing business that would go on forever,” said Christina Hunter.

Steven Hunter Logging is a family owned business, rooted by this brother/sister duo, but the business could soon be on the chopping block.

"That's all that we know. We have many, several thousands of acres that we have contracted to cut, but now we don't know what we are going to do,” she said.

Each week, tons of the wood is cut down, loaded on to a truck and taken to the Verso paper mill.

Stephen Hunter said he will keep delivering loads to Wickliffe, Kentucky for about another month, but the loss of sales in Verso has forced him to look further for business.

"We are looking for other resources. Just trying to reach out a little further maybe to try and find some place to try and take my wood,” said Steven Hunter.

But the further he has to travel, the less he will make.

The Hunter siblings agree they have their employees to worry about too.

"We are a family,” said Christina Hunter.

Both Hunters say it's too soon to talk about possible layoffs.
