Carbondale man sentenced for attempting to escape

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

The Jackson County State’s Attorney announced Friday that a Carbondale man was sentenced to the Department of Corrections for escape.

On June 22, 2015, Charles Thomas, 23, of Carbondale, was sentenced to the Illinois Department of Corrections after a probation violation.

As he was being escorted to the holding cell at the Jackson County Courthouse, he broke free of the security officer, broke out a glass window, and ran from the courthouse.

After a several block chase, he was caught by police officers from the Carbondale Police Department who happened to be in the courthouse.

Thomas pleaded guilty to the charge on Thursday.

He was sentenced to four years in the Department of Corrections, followed by a period of two years of mandatory supervised release.

The investigation was conducted by the Carbondale Police Department and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. Assistant State’s Attorney Mark Hamrock was responsible for the prosecution of this case.
