First-year SIU law students volunteer at Giant City State Park

MAKANDA, IL (KFVS) -

First-year SIUC law students volunteered at the Giant City State Park near Carbondale, Illinois on Friday morning.

Students met at the main campground site and helped paint the playground shelter, tables, and fire and yard hydrants.

Students also cleaned signs, installed archery targets and frames and fire ring supports and assisted with trail maintenance.

Law students say the cause is a great way to start off their first year.

"It's a great bonding experience," law student, Jerry Costello III said. "We're here to give back and it feels great."

"It puts you in the right mindset cause I've been told you can't do everything by yourself, especially in law school, so to work with others and work well," law student, Josh Jump said.

"We're just trying to help out the community and they're trying to help us in our lawyering skills," Cassie Hood said. "Just trying to help us help the community out."

SIU administrators say this is the fifth year the law school has done a volunteerism project.

The class of 2018 includes 121 first-year law students.
