Authorities investigate possible sexual assault at SIU

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

One is in custody after a sexual assault incident involving three SIU students.

A lieutenant at SIU says they received a call about a reported sexual assault at about 9:33 a.m.

A suspect was taken into custody at 9:41 a.m.

The suspect is identified as Laverne B Harkins-Monya, who has been accused of clothed lewd contact with three victims, according to SIU. Harkins-Monya is not affiliated with the university.

SIU police officer Chad Beights says the incident is isolated, but he urges students to exercise a higher level of caution in the first few weeks of classes.

"SIU is a safe campus. We have officers that are designated to the residence halls, and buildings," Beights explained. "Develop a support group, stick with who you know, and your first point of contact can always be your Resident Assistant for any problems."

Beights suggested new students look into clubs and activities to build a support group. You can find out what the university offers by clicking here.
