Cape Jaycees BBQ fest to kick off at Arena Park

Expect to smell BBQ if you're around Arena Park in Cape Girardeau on Friday.

The Cape Jaycees 23rd annual BBQ Fest kicks off at about 9 a.m.

Jack Trickey, president of the Cape Girardeau Jaycees, said this will be the biggest BBQ competition they've hosted thus far.

"We have over 60 teams coming in from 9 different states. We will have ribs, and butt and brisket and chicken for competition," Trickey said.

BBQ teams will have the chance to compete in four categories: chicken, pork ribs, pork butt, and brisket.

The top competitor will be awarded $2,500.

The event is open to the public on Friday to watch as the teams cook the BBQ.

Trickey said if the weather stays good, about 1,000 people will attend.

For $5 people can get a pulled pork sandwich, chips and a drink.

The teams will also perform skits on stage as a part of the showmanship competition. The entertainment begins at 7 p.m.

At 8 p.m. the Mike Renick Band will perform live music.

Trickey said there will be something for the whole family to enjoy.

"It's just going to be a great time," Trickey said.

All proceeds from the event go to the Jaycees Toybox program.

"Every bit of money we raise goes towards families and underprivileged children in our area during Christmas where we give them gifts and clothes and it's just a great thing to put your money and time to," Trickey said.

On Saturday, judges will take a look at the meat and award to top competitor the grand prize.
