MINER, MO (KFVS) -

A paraglider was injured after he crashed onto Interstate 55 in southeast Missouri on Thursday evening.

The motorized aircraft went down in the northbound lanes of I-55 at mile marker 68.4 near Miner around 7:45 p.m.

The interstate was blocked for about an hour.

Captain Jim McMillen with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety said the man was flying around the area near the interstate when he appears to have lost altitude.

Miner Police Chief Chris Griggs said the paraglider actually hit a motorhome that was driving on the interstate as he fell out of the sky.

Chief Griggs said it appears the man had an issue with his aircraft.

Video shows the man, Chad, gliding perilously close to a large billboard next to power lines before he crashes onto I-55.

Jeff Beeson recorded the video and said Chad had one successful flight, but he started feeling lucky and decided to go for a second. Beeson did not want to release Chad's last name at this time.

"I’m thinking he panicked, it was his second time up in it and it went to left and he ran into an RV," Beeson said. "I just took off running, I didn’t know that he landed in the interstate, but when we got up there yea he was laying in the middle of the interstate.”

Video just after the crash shows the man talking to his friends while lying in the middle of the interstate with the paraglider apparatus still attached to his back.

Joe Adams navigated Chad during the flight and said when he told Chad he was too high to land, he knew something was wrong.

“When he crossed the billboard he went to throttle back up to get some altitude and when he did his motor revved up and he had no power," Adams said. "So his propeller just stopped spinning. I said 'flare, flare, flare' and when he did that he hit the RV, there he was.”

When asked how he was feeling Chad said, "Ah not too good. Could be a lot worse. Upset my motor's broke."

Chad was taken to a Cape Girardeau hospital and later transferred to a St. Louis hospital, according to Beeson. He said Chad has several broken bones.

Chad does not face any charges.
