SIU move-in weekend begins, classes start Monday

A flood of volunteers clad in maroon and white bustle in teams in an effort to guide several thousand students’ belongings from tightly packed cars, into a their respective rooms for move-in weekend at SIU

Some of those trips involve a hike to the top of three sky-rises somewhat out of their element to begin with; the nearest building to eclipse the height of SIU’s “Brush Towers” stands in Springfield.

As practiced and efficient as the several hundred volunteers on-duty strive to be, the process is an intimidating one for many, including Chicago-native Zavannah Diaz.

She moved in on Thursday for her first year in college to chase a life-long dream-job as a veterinarian.

“Moving in…  Kind of scared… more scared than excited actually.” Diaz explained while her mom jokingly rejoiced over having one-less load of laundry to do back in Chicago.

Zavannah said she’s most anxious about her new seventeen-story home filled with people waiting to be met.

“Throughout high school and stuff, I was never one to want to walk up to people and introduce myself,” Diaz recalled. “So this will teach me what it’s like to try that out.”

Most students attending SIU are more than 100 miles from its secluded spot in Carbondale, which only adds to feelings of separation for some parents

“In case of an emergency it’s a long drive here… or maybe I would have to fly” explained Diaz’s mother Jessica Martinez, “but she’ll be okay. […] First time sending a kid to school, so there’s a lot of anxiety but I have to cut the umbilical cord and let her loose.”

When asked if she was afraid going into the Fall semester, Diaz said no. “I’m… excited.” She continued, “I’ll finally get to do what I’ve always wanted to do, so it’s a big step.”

Classes at SIU begin on Monday, August 24.
