Mother speaks out after losing son in drowning accident

Lovable, excitement and joy. Those were the words Amber Houston used to describe her four-year-old son, Amir.

“He had the biggest smile that would light up the room,” Houston said.

And a true lover of Ninja Turtles.

“I would ask him what color the grass was and he would say 'Ninja Turtle.'”

On August 15, a family and the community of Herrin, Illinois were rocked when 4-year-old Amir Fenner died in an accidental drowning.

“It was unreal,” Houston said. “I couldn’t believe it was happening to me. I couldn’t fathom the fact that my son was gone.”

Eight departments responded to help search for Amir, but his body was found in the lake at Herrin park several hours after he went missing.

Today, Amir’s mother said the shock has yet to wear off.

“He’s four, he would’ve been five in November,” Houston said. “It’s just hard. And I’m trying to stay as strong as I can be for my other two. Just showing them that everything’s going to be okay, showing them that he’s still there to watch over us. That he always and forever is going to be with us.”

Houston said the love she’s been receiving from the community truly means a lot.

“It’s been a blessing to know that there’s so many people out there are donating, and willing to help out and just by saying prayers to the family,” she said.

Houston said if Amir were to teach someone anything, it would be to enjoy the moment.

“No matter what Amir did, he enjoyed whatever he did,” Houston said. “You never know what tomorrow could bring. Just enjoy everybody in your life no matter what the circumstances are.”

A candlelight vigil for Amir will be held Friday at Ray Fosse Park in Marion, Ill. at 6 p.m.

“God’s doing the work right now,” Houston said. “I can definitely say cause I don’t think without him, I don’t know – without him, without my kids…without my family. I don’t know how I’d be getting through this.”

The family has set up a GoFundMe account for Amir and his funeral arrangements.

The funeral is set for Saturday, August 22. The wake from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The service starts at 11 a.m. at the Harvest Christian Life Center at 12212 Cedar Grove Rd. in Marion, Ill.
