MO students learn with new 3D technology

Education has changed a lot over the last several years, with all the new technology in the classroom.

Now, at one Heartland school district, interactive learning takes on a whole new meaning, with the first-of-its-kind 3D education programs and tools.

It’s not your average 21st century classroom students at Richland School District in Essex, Mo. are learning in 3D.

“You just like can’t take your eyes off it because you’re so engaged,” student Madison Snyder said.

The Rover projects a 3D image and pictures fly off the screen and allow students to see inside. The technology comes with 1,500 common-core aligned lessons.

“A teacher can look up a core standard in the Rover and find a lesson on that and then teach that directly to the students,” Technology Director Adam Touchette said.

The Rover is just one of the new 3D tools, the district also has the ZSpace. It’s a program with models you can move, take apart, and interact with.

“The 3D models show us inside your teeth, your gums, inside animals, the anatomy,” student Adam Chafin said.

Plus, the students also get to use the new 3D Doodlers.

“You can draw images and make them come to life. Normally, if you drew something on a paper, it’s only 2D, and with this you can make images 3D,” student Garret Phillips said.

Kids say it makes learning more fun and more creative and teachers agree.

“It’s all about giving the students the latest technology, putting it in their hands,” Touchette said.

The Richland School District has less than 300 students.

The school board approved funding for the 3D technology after a Georgia-based company came to the area to show teachers and staff what all it can do.

Richland is the only district in the Midwest with this type of 3D technology. Staff members say they hope to purchase even more tools like these in the future.
