Approximately 1,300 student moved their belongings into dorms on the Southeast Missouri State campus on Thursday.

Move-in day marks the unofficial start to the fall semester.

Students started their day at the Student Recreation Center North to get their keys and from there traveled to their dorm.

More than 1,000 volunteers were on hand to help students move in.

"That's what makes everything go so smoothly. They just descend on these cars as soon as they get pulled in and help those students and their parents get things moved out into their residence hall rooms," Kendra Skinner said, director of residence life.

Some students said the day would be overwhelming, but the goal was to just go with the flow.

"Just unpacking. I think I need to go to the store and get some other stuff that I forgot because that is obviously going to happen and then just hanging out  when he gets here," Liam Ohlendorf said.

First-year students started check in at 8 a.m.

Once students are moved in, a jammed packed weekend of events awaits them.

Katie Foshee, Assistant Director of Admissions for New Student Programs, said these events help get students oriented to campus life.

"They get to know not only other incoming students so they kind of start to build their community on campus but they get introduced to the services available, they help to connect with faculty and staff on our campus to know who is there for them when they need assistance," Foshee said.

That evening, residence hall students are asked to participate in a meeting with their hall director and resident assistant who will introduce them to on-campus living. At 8 p.m., new residence hall and commuter students are invited to a Move-In Bash from 8-10 p.m. on the front lawn of Kent Library near the Kala M. Stroup Fountain on the Plaza.
