Red Cross hosts Community Shelter Training Exercise in Butler Co.

BUTLER COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

The southeast Missouri Chapter of the American Red Cross will be hosting shelter training at the Black River Coliseum in Poplar Bluff from the evening of Friday, September 11 to Saturday morning, September 12.

"In an effort to build a more resilient and more prepared Missouri, we are excited to have this training in our community," volunteer leader for the Southeast Missouri Chapter of The American Red Cross Jeff Shawan said. "It is great to know that at the culmination of this event, there will be more citizens in our community who are trained and ready to respond during a time of disaster."

The training will include classroom style learning as well as shelter simulations and tangible set up and breakdown exercises of shelter execution. Each person who attends the training and successfully completes the class, will be American Red Cross Shelter Certified.

Following the completion of the shelter training on Saturday, Sept. 12, the Emergency Management Agency and partners will host a ceremony to not only honor the fallen heroes from the tragic events of Sept. 11, but also to recognize the actions of Americans who came together on Sept. 11.

"We wanted to not only give pause to commemorate the tragedy of Sept. 11, but also recognize how people from every walk of life came together in the days after the attacks to help each other," Robbie Myers Butler County Emergency Management Director said. "We really wanted to focus on the spirit of service and resiliency of us as a nation and a community."

Both the training and the ceremony are open to the public. To participate in the training, please register by September 9. Please contact the Red Cross office or the Butler County Emergency Management Agency, 573-686-8686 for the registration information.
