Carbondale man sentenced to 6 years for domestic battery

A Carbondale,Illinois man has been sentenced to the Department of Corrections on domestic battery charges.

Michael Oliver, 37, was sentenced to 6 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, followed by 4 years of mandatory supervised release. This sentence will run consecutively to a prison term of 2 years that Oliver is currently serving out of Pulaski County.

According to Jackson County State's Attorney Michael C. Carr, this sentence was imposed after a jury found Oliver guilty of domestic battery on June 29.

He said the evidence presented at trial showed that a Carbondale police officer was dispatched to a Carbondale hospital due to a report of a domestic battery victim.

The police officer testified that the victim had severe swelling and bruising on her face, chest and arms.

The victim testified that Oliver slapped her, punched her and beat her with a belt the previous afternoon.

Once she was dropped off at the hospital on Nov. 15, the victim immediately asked that the hospital call the police so the beating could be reported. The victim testified that she had received additional injuries that were not immediately visible to the responding officer.

Oliver was arrested shortly after the officer talked to the victim, and he remained in jail pending his trial.

After the jury verdict, Oliver was taken to the IDOC to begin to serve his prison sentence on the Pulaski County, Ill. case.

The charge of domestic battery is a class 4 felony, and was enhanced because of a prior domestic battery conviction. Due to Oliver's prior criminal record, he was sentenced to the maximum extended prison term of 6 years.

The investigation was conducted by the Carbondale Police Department. Assistant State's Attorney Penny J. Pierson was responsible for the prosecution of this case.
