CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

In Tuesday's Cape Girardeau City Council meeting, the council approved a resolution for design and construction on South Sprigg where sinkholes formed back in 2013.

Sinkholes formed near the Cape LaCroix Creek Bridge on South Sprigg street during flooding of the Mississippi River. Since then, the road has been closed.

The agreement between the City of Cape Girardeau and Horner & Shifrin, Inc. for the South Sprigg Street Roadway Restoration provides design and construction to address the sinkholes.

Horner & Shifrin has completed the investigative work and the project is ready to move on to the design and construction phases.

The cost of the design and construction administrative work for this project will not exceed $571,264.71.

This amount will qualify for 80 percent reimbursement under the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission Emergency Program Relief.

The city has also received approval for a low interest loan from the Missouri Transportation Finance Corporation for $3,965,100.

The South Sprigg Street road closure has affected several homes and businesses, along with access to the city's transfer station.

The project still needs approval from MoDOT.
