Massac Co. Sheriff's Dept. to buy dash cams

MASSAC COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

The Massac County, Illinois Sheriff’s Department will be adding dash camera’s to several of its deputy cruisers.

Sheriff Ted Holder said his office has approved the purchase of seven dash cameras and a computer system to maintain the video. He expects that to cost between $12,000 and $15,000 and the funds will come out of this year’s department operating budget.

“We knew we we’re going to have to do it eventually,” Holder said. “It’s more for officer protection than anything.”

The sheriff said the budget is tight, but he felt it was a good time to make the purchase. Holder said surrounding law enforcement agencies surrounding Massac County have the technology and that his department is working to keep up with other agencies.

“It’s always tight,” Holder sad. “We haven’t had any major expense this year.”

The dash cameras will record video on the inside and outside of deputy cruisers. Holder will soon be working with the Massac County State’s Attorney to develop a policy. He said the Sheriff’s Department is looking at the Metropolis Police Department for guidance.

Holder said the department is also looking toward deputy body cameras for the future.
