THEBES, IL (KFVS) -

Firefighters fought a fire on the corner of 4th Street and Mulberry in Thebes early Tuesday morning.

According to the fire chief with the Thebes Volunteer Fire Department, two houses and a shed were burning.

The fire also spread to a mobile home.

The fire chief says everyone inside is safe.

The fire appears to have destroyed at least two of the homes.

The state fire marshal and a K9 unit are investigating the cause.

Witnesses say they heard an explosion and then saw flames.

Alexander County Dispatchers confirm fire crews were called out around 4:50 a.m.

At one point, firefighters smelled gas. The gas leak has been fixed.
