Does church make you happier in life?

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

A new study in the American Journal of Epidemiology conducted by researchers at the London School of Economics and University Medical Center in the Netherlands shows that more people are happier in life longer when participating in a religious group rather than doing charity work, taking educational courses or participating in a community group.

Dozens of people around Cape Girardeau were asked which option would make them happier: religious group, charity work, educational courses, or community group.

Every person said that being involved with a religious group or going to church makes them happiest. However, many say it's more about the people in their religious group that makes them comfortable.

The Heartland could be considered the heart of the Bible belt. Church groups gather together to help charities and become more involved with the community. Some even offer educational courses.

Dylan Kennedy from Catron, Mo. says he is from a religious family that focuses on helping others.

"The church is like a platform to branch out to these other areas to help in, such as charity involvement and helping the community," Kennedy said.

He says helping charities is rewarding and makes him happy. He feels it's more about who the people are that they connect with in these groups.

"It depends on the person and their upbringing," Kennedy said. "It makes me happy helping others and seeing others benefiting from the simple things that I've done to help them."

Ashley Stahlman from Cape Girardeau says it's about who you hang around with that makes a person happy. For Stahlman, the church offers many ways to help. The people involved with the church groups are the ones she wants to work with to help others.

"Being active in an organization (church) too, it gives you an opportunity to participate in a fund raising event or do something for a local hospital," Stahlman said.

While all chose religious participation made them the happiest, many were surprised that so many chose religion in the study.

When it comes down to it, many say religion provides happiness long term, while the other options, such as charities provide more short term happiness.
