ESSEX, MO (KFVS) -

For some Richland High School students, Saturday was one for the record books.

About a dozen students were treated like royalty on Saturday. But why the special treatment?

The Richland yearbook team and have received some serious recognition lately - racking up 21 national and international awards last school year for photography.

On Saturday, staff, students and friends decided to throw them a celebratory event.

Students rode into school in a limo and stepped onto the red carpet.

They then walked into the school halls to see a gallery of all the awards and over 300 photos that lined the hallway.

Everyone stopped to look at the photos and awards won and shared stories, hugs and smiles.

This was a day many students say they didn't think was possible.

Parker Miller, an editor with the yearbook, says he was shocked and surprised every time they won an award last year.

"This put Richland and Essex on the map, I feel like," Parker says. "Normally it's sports that get the fame and not the people that take the pictures."

Kyle Carter, business teacher and yearbook sponsor, says he is excited for the kids that are part of he yearbook staff.

"They deserved it. I knew by the quality of photos that we would probably win some awards but I didn't think 21," says Carter.

It's a dream come true for students who put so much hard work and have fun in what they do.

Carter says they love taking photos and writing, and feel it is a new trend in the world that these students are grabbing onto and taking off with.

Carter says Richland has been great with academics and has even had some recent state recognition.

The yearbook staff has now added more recognition to the school and many can't wait to see what these kids do next.
