MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) -

Paducah-McCracken County was denied a federal disaster declaration.

The Kentucky Emergency Management Agency denied the request due to the damage not being significant enough to reach the federal disaster threshold.

"Kentucky Emergency Management has stated that it is very difficult for one county to receive the federal disaster declaration unless the damage is catastrophic," Paducah Fire Chief Steve Kyle said. "Local officials have tried every avenue possible to represent our citizens and get assistance. This is the final ruling in that attempt."

Emergency management in Paducah-McCracken County made the request after the July 7 flash flooding.

"We are not alone in feeling the disappointment from this declaration denial," McCracken Co. EMA Director Jerome Mansfield said. "A few days after McCracken County received its flash flooding event, dozens of counties in eastern Kentucky were hit hard with storms, tornadoes, flooding and landslides. This week we received word that only four of those counties in eastern Kentucky will be receiving individual assistance aid."

McCracken County EMA and the City of Paducah submitted the documentation to KEMA regarding the flood damage on Monday, Aug. 3. In July, the city and county asked residents and businesses affected by the flood damage to provide information regarding their damage and insurance coverage.

Those affected were asked to call with their information from July 20 through July 24. During that time period, 133 private residences submitted information in addition to 29 businesses.
