SCOTT COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

The Scott County Sheriff's Office reports the man accused of holding a woman hostage at a motel in Miner has died.

Sheriff Rick Walter reports Gary Ray Corder, Jr., 31, was found unconscious in his jail cell on Tuesday, after what appeared to be a suicide attempt.

According to the Scott County Coroner, Corder attempted to hang himself using his bedding.

The sheriff's office reports Corder was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Corder appeared before a judge for arraignment via video conference from the Scott County Jail earlier that day.

He was arrested in early August after a lengthy standoff with authorities at a Super 8 Hotel in Miner, where he threatened to kill a woman.

Corder faced several charges following that incident including: kidnapping, armed criminal action, forgery and false imprisonment.

Corder's death is still under investigation by the Scott County Sheriff's Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
