Jackson unveils East Elementary School

JACKSON, MO (KFVS) -

When school starts on Aug. 13, some Jackson students will be headed to a brand new elementary school.

East Elementary School is the newest building to the district.

Administrators say one of the first thing parents and students will notice inside is all the colors on the walls and floors.

Dr. Wade Bartels, associate superintendent, says they wanted to move away from an institutional look and encourage kids to get excited about learning.

"We hope it's a place where kids come and they see the color, they get excited, and they're ready to come to school ... That's really part of the idea behind all of the exciting colors in the building," Bartels said.

Other aspects the district focused on is wide open common areas that allow for big group instruction.

Technology was also a major focus. Among other things, each room is equipped with wi-fi, a document camera to project papers on the wall, and at each cabbie you'll find an outlet.

Bartels said these types of additions create more options for learning.

"We really wanted the building to be able to be flexible and not have the building dictate the instruction, really have the instruction drive the use of the building," Bartels said.

The 105,000 sq. foot building has been in the making for three years.

Voters made it possible when they voted "yes" on a bond issue in 2012.

The building will help solve overcrowding issues throughout the district.

There will be a chance for the public to check out the new elementary during a community open house on Sept. 13.
