Poplar Bluff schools to continue program to help students in need

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -

Back-to-school is here and Poplar Bluff School District is back to implementing a program that helps kids in need all school year long, using social media.

Through “Bright Futures,” community members, business owners, parents, churches join efforts in making sure every student has what they need to succeed.

The way it works is, for example, if a teacher notices a student needing new shoes, that need is posted on the Facebook page, and a community member donates shoes. Program leaders say needs are usually met within a half hour.

However, t’s not only about meeting those immediate physical needs but also educational needs, like providing free clubs for kids who can’t afford them.

“We reached out and said ‘Hey, we’ve got these kids who don’t necessarily do some of the things the other schools do can you help us out?’ Of course, when you ask, people have the tendency to give,’” Active Community Member and Assistant Principal Sheldon Tyler said.

No matter the need, the program is all about facilitating support from the community for the students.

“I think we have a community that wants to be involved and is but it’s just a matter of making them aware of what the needs are,” Donna Moore, a social worker with the district, said.

This is Poplar Bluff’s second school year to have the “Bright Futures” program and it’s the only district to use the program in the southeast Missouri area.
