Southeast Missouri State University is closing a residence hall on campus less than two weeks before the start of the 2015-2016 school year.

Cheney Hall, located at the corner of Cheney Drive and North Henderson Street, is closing for structural and infrastructure repairs.

This leaves 85 students who will have to change their plans and live in other residence halls.

Those who were scheduled to live in Cheney will be provided alternate campus housing at the same room rate in other residence halls on Southeast's campus. Students return to campus on Aug. 20.

The university, outside engineers and architects have been examining several facilities across campus over the past year.

Cheney Hall was identified as a building in need of future renovation. It was scheduled to be open for residence hall students this year.

However, heavy rains caused some settling of the building foundation and stair-stepped cracking of the northwest corner of the building.

That caused the university to decided to close the building for a full structural analysis which could involve soil borings and/or excavation.

"Our concern is that if we wait another year to do the work with the freezing and thawing of Southeast Missouri that would only get worse," said Asst. Vice President Bruce Skinner. "So when we go to make repairs a year from now we'd be dealing with a bigger problem than we would if we tackle it right now."

The building is as least 75 years old.
