SIUC police fund-raise for K-9 Unit

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

The Southern Illinois University Police Department is seeking $50,000 in donations from the community for the purchase of a full K-9 unit.

Sergeant Chad Beights with SIUC police said the department would use the unit for a variety of large scale events.

“We want to use it for events on campus – special events, athletic events, searching of buildings if necessary, dignitary protections, anything where large crowds could gather we want the ability to have that K-9 there to help us with searches," Beights said.

The university has seen a growing number of bomb threats in the past several years and a K-9 unit would help the team detect dangerous devices.

Sergeant Beights said the money raised will go toward purchasing and training a dog and handler, a special K-9 vehicle, and other equipment to complete a K-9 unit.
