EAST PRAIRIE, MO (KFVS) -

An East Prairie man jailed on domestic assault charges is facing new charges this week, after an investigation revealed evidence of victim tampering.

Mississippi County Sheriff Keith Moore says the investigation began last month, when jail officials learned inmate Brian Keith Merryman, 38, of East Prairie, Mo., had allegedly contacted a victim in one of his pending criminal cases.

Upon further investigation, officials confirmed Merryman had placed several recorded phone calls from the Mississippi County Detention Center to the victim in his pending domestic assault case.

According to the deputy’s report, the details of the calls caused officials to believe Merryman attempted to convince the victim to withdraw support for the prosecution of that offense.

Merryman is charged with three counts of tampering with a victim in a felony prosecution.

Persons convicted of victim tampering are not eligible for parole.

In addition to the newest charges and the underlying domestic assaults, Merryman also faces an unrelated victim tampering charge stemming from a previous domestic assault.

Merryman remains in the Mississippi County Detention Center with his bond set at $325,000.
