Carterville High School coaches prepare for game-day injuries

Athletic coaches at Carterville High School trained to prepare for game-day injuries in the high school's auxiliary gym on Wednesday, Aug. 5.

Coaches and staff participated in a series of drills aimed at preparing them to respond to a number of possible athletic injuries until medical professionals arrive.

The school employees learned CPR and how to respond to neck or spinal injuries in a technique called spinal boarding.

Carterville Football coach Jake Wakey, an athletic coach for Carterville of 13 years, said the training received today will prepare him for real life situations.

“Some young man’s future or young woman’s future if not on the football field that could potentially be in your hands until there are professionals there to help you," Wakey said. "So, you want for the kids and for their parents to know as much as you possibly can.”

The event was a partnership between the Carterville School District and sports medicine specialists with Sportsology of Southern Illinois Healthcare.
