Students across the Heartland are heading back to school, but that means they'll be hitting the books as well.

Long gone are the days of those traditional, handwritten note cards. These days more and more students are looking ways to study on their phones.

Check out this list for some of our favorite back to school apps this year:

Quizlet

  • Made for studying on the go.
  • Students have the ability to create their own flashcards, and be tested on everything from those animal kingdoms to the week's spelling list.
  • There's even a fill-in the blank mode, where you have to type the term or definition.
  • It's free for Apple and Android users.

iHomework

  • Helps keep students with multiple classes organized.
  • The app keeps homework assignments and deadlines all together in one place.
  • It even allows you to link a student's reading material to your assignments.
  • It's only available for Apple users and costs $1.99.

DuoLingo

  • The app turns learning Spanish, French or other languages into a game.
  • Helps students learn new words and verb tenses with racing games, role playing and even a chance to earn bonus points.
  • It's free and available for Apple and Android users.

Easy Bib

  • This app gives students an easy way complete citations for a paper.
  • It can be easy as typing or taking a picture of the book's barcode to get what you need.
  • It's free for Apple and Android users.
