Back to School: Tips for parents dealing with separation anxiety

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

If your little one is getting ready to start Kindergarten, it can often be hard to let go.

Before you know it, school will be back in session.

The new school year often comes with excitement.

But for many parents, separation anxiety can be a real thing.

There are some things you can do to help make the separation anxiety a little bit easier.

Aha!parenting.com suggests developing a goodbye ritual.

This is good for you and your child.

Also, if you prepare your child for a smooth adjustment, it will make it easier on you too.

Let them get familiar with the school and the teacher.

You’ll feel better knowing they’re in good hands.

And keep yourself busy, it can help you cope.

“I’ll go to the mall that day or plan a trip to St. Louis that day, on the first day” parent Bethany Byrd said. “So I don't have to sit here and just cry.”

Byrd has a child entering Kindergarten.

Until that first day, Byrd plans to enjoy the summer while it lasts.
