Emancipation Celebration in Paducah starts Wednesday


The 8th annual August Emancipation Celebration starts Wednesday and runs through Sunday.

The theme this year is "Paducah's Black History--Sports and Entertainment."  

Things will kick off with a back to school street dance at the WCY Community Center at 6 p.m. All youth are welcome.

On Thursday, there will be a luncheon at noon at the WCY Center.  

That night, the Riverfront Summer Concert Series finale will be a Jazz and Blues concert.

Family Fun Day is scheduled for Friday beginning at noon. Bring the kids out for food, vendors, activities, and inflatable games! The day runs from noon until dusk.

The "Big House Gaines" basketball tournament will run all day Friday with the finals set for Saturday afternoon.

Friday evening the Emancipation Dance will be held at the Robert Cherry Civic Center at 9 p.m. Tickets are $30 at the door, $25 in advance.

On Saturday morning, breakfast will be offered at the WCY Center at 7 a.m. followed by a parade that begins at 11 a.m. 

The Hat and Heels Dance will be at the Civic Center that evening starting at 9 p.m. Tickets are $20 at the door, $15 in advance.

Things wrap up on Sunday with a salute to Gospel music at New Greater Love Missionary Baptist Church at 4 p.m.

There will also be a car show, vendors, and activities, including a horseshoe tournament, beginning at 2 p.m. at Robert Coleman Park.
