Cairo medical center struggles during IL budget hiatus

CAIRO, IL (KFVS) -

The Illinois government not deciding on a budget could mean laying off some of the 75 plus staff at the Delta Center in Cairo.

This nonprofit organization provides help to people in the community with mental health, drug abuse as many other health issues and receive funding from Medicaid and the state.

Since there is still no budget in place, directors of the organization had to get creative with getting funding.

Director Lisa Tolbert said she’s found a provider and they’re currently working out the details of that agreement to keep the organization running.

She said shutting the doors is not an option for people in this community.

“More individuals ending up in emergency rooms, who already can’t handle what they have coming through right now, and its costly," she said. "You’re going to end up with more people in jails because a lot of the people that you serve in mental health and substance abuse, if they’re not getting treatment or staying on medication, then a lot of times behavior occurs that could get them in trouble with legal system.”

Some jobs may also be affected with switching the companies, but Tolbert said she will try her best to make sure the new providers knows the importance of their services to this community.
