Girl sells art work to raise money for Haiti

RIPLEY COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

A little girl is making a big difference by turning her passion into a mission.

The seven year old is using the art to impact the lives of children in Haiti by sending money for them to buy food and other things they need.

Every day Emma Lee Johns sits down to work, making beautiful works of art.

She carefully picking the colors and shades the picture just right, but what makes her art special isn’t the color or even the design. The true masterpiece is found in the heart of the artist.

“We are going to sell it to make money,” Emma said.

All of Emma’s artwork is for sale to help children thousands of miles away.

“We were just doing art, painting and everything and Emma just asked me ‘Do all kids get to do art?’ and I said ‘No, not everyone gets to do art.’ She didn’t really quite understand,” Jayda Kelly said.

That’s when Jayda, Emma’s babysitter and older cousin, began to explain the hardships in Haiti. They watched videos showing the hunger and suffering of the Haitian children.

“What did you see in the video?” Reporter Kadee Brosseau asked.

“People eating dirt,” Emma answered.

“How did that make you feel?” Brosseau asked.

“Bad,” Emma said.

However, Emma’s compassion didn’t stop there.

“At first she was like, ‘I want to send them food’ and ‘I want to send them toys.’ And I kind of explained to her, you know, ‘We can’t send those things in the mail.’ And she’s like ‘We can just send them money and they can get the things that they need,’” Jayda said.

Jayda helped Emma find an organization through which to give, called Hope for Haiti, and helped spread the word on Facebook.

“I think that it’s so amazing to see everyone just very inspired. We’ve seen it shared all over Missouri and different places, which is a really big deal for Emma,” Jayda said.

So, together as a team, Emma and Jayda join efforts.

“We work together,” Emma said.

It’s all for the purpose of sharing the kindness of one very sweet little girl and adding to the gallery of love one picture at a time.

“Love God love people,” Emma said.

Emma has set a goal of $500, for now. To give, visit Emma’s Art 4 Haiti Facebook page. Also, “like” it to follow her story.
