IL Senator urges EPA to protect towns along Mississippi River

ILLINOIS (KFVS) -

An Illinois Senator says the EPA needs to protect towns along the Mississippi River.

In a letter sent on Thursday, July 30, Sen. Dick Durbin urged the agency to veto the St. John's Bayou New Madrid Floodway Project.

Durbin said the plan would close the last floodway along the river in Missouri, which would force the floodwaters into places like Cairo.

He also believes the project goes against the Clean Water Act, and writing it would destroy fish and wildlife habitats in southern Illinois and southeast Missouri.
