RIPLEY COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

A suspect is in custody in the beating death of a 72-year-old man in Ripley County Wednesday morning.

Ripley County Coroner Mike Jackson said the man died from blunt force trauma to the head and manual strangulation.

Johnny H. Stanley, 43, was charged with first degree murder.

According to court documents, Stanley beat and kicked Irven "Ron" Ronald Yarber.

The Ripley County Sheriff's Office received a call on Wednesday, July 29 from Yarber's wife. They say she called at about 3:59 a.m. and said her husband had been seriously assaulted, while he was sleeping, by her son.

When a deputy arrived at the home in Doniphan, he said he found Ron Yarber and Johnny Stanley in the home. He said Yarber was in an unconscious state and was taken by ambulance to an area hospital where he later died.

During an interview, Yarber's wife told officers that Stanley had been living with her and her husband for about seven months.

Officers say she told them she and Yarber were asleep in bed when she woke up to Stanley hitting Yarber in the head and face. She said Stanley said multiple times, "I'm going to kill you," while he hit Yarber.

She said she tried to stop the assault by biting Stanley on his forearm and hitting him in the head with a glass bottle, but that Stanley continued to hit Yarber, and later kicked him after he had fallen onto the floor.

According to Yarber's wife, when it was over, Stanley walked out of their bedroom and said, "I killed him."

Stanley was arrested and taken to Doniphan City Jail. His bond has been set at $500,000 cash only.
