Food pantry adding security after recent thefts

A string of robberies has a food pantry in Scott City wondering, why them?

Volunteer Dorothy Dees said she was devastated when her daughter asked her about two missing boxes after picking up donations from Walmart.

“I had three boxes marked for one box each week for three weeks for you to distribute and 2 boxes are gone," Dee said her daughter told her.

After looking for the boxes after a few days, she decided to call Scott County Police Department..

The food pantry shares the building with a car repair company, who she said sometimes allow customers to exit through their back door.

Dees said the food pantry is only open on Tuesdays and she wants to stops the company from allowing that.

“We believe they were able to enter through the back door," she said. "We are trying to eliminate the amount of people coming through our place while we’re closed and hopefully that’s taken care of.”

Though Dees does this as a volunteer, she says this really effects the people who need it most.

“But it hurts that someone would do that to people in need," she said emotionally. "I’m not the one in need these other 150 families that we serve a month are the ones that I feel for.”

But moving forward, Dees said the food pantry will adding more security to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

“We plan to put in some camera and possibly enclose these areas that are not open with some door ways," she said.

As for the suspect, Dees says she only ask for one thing.

“I’ll pray for them, and hopefully they pray for me too," she asked.
